Ep. 122 — MONTY PYTHON'S LIFE OF BRIAN (1979)
Our Easter theme this week continues, but with a little detour. While we're spending the majority of this month taking a look at movies that depict the life of Jesus Christ, this week, we're discussing one that very specifically isn't about Jesus at all, but about a guy who was born sorta near him at sorta the same time.
Of course, the fact that it wasn't actually about Jesus at all didn't keep MONTY PYTHON'S LIFE OF BRIANfrom being incredibly controversial upon its original release 40 years ago.
Much like last week's film (THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST), the release of the Pythons' satirical look at religion prompted picketing, and outright banning in many provinces in England and in several countries across the world.
As we dive into our behind-the-scenes look at the film, we'll address the controversy and whether we think it was even warranted, or if the movie was misunderstood by religious leaders of the time. We'll also take a look at where the film fits in the pantheon of great cult comedies and in the overall careers of Monty Python.
And, naturally, we're also nominating it for the Psychotronic Hall of Fame, so we'll need your help on deciding whether or not it goes in.
