Neill Blomkamp Set To Direct ROBOCOP Sequel

Neill Blomkamp (DISTRICT 9, ELYSIUM) has just signed on to direct a ROBOCOP sequel for MGM, according to Deadline

Writers of Paul Verhoeven's original film, Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner are coming on to produce the film, which is being re-written by Justin Rhodes (Tim Miller's upcoming TERMINATOR sequel).

Re-written? Yes! Miller is reworking a script that was originally scheduled written by Neumeier and Miner years ago as a planned sequel to Verhoeven's 1987 film.

That means that, yes, this is a sequel to the original ROBOCOP, not the 2014 remake! The big question then is whether or not the film is going to acknowledge or ignore ROBOCOP 2 & 3 (ignoring, or mostly ignoring unpopular sequels seems to be the thing these days).

What do you guys think? I'm a little colder on Blomkamp after ELYSIUM and especially CHAPPIE (which is despised), but i was admittedly pretty curious about how scrapped take on ALIEN, so I'm kind of excited to see what he does with this property.

Keep and eye out here for further development on ROBOCOP RETURNS as they come along.
